Shedding Light on Effective Trade Show Exhibit Design Nation's most enlightened marketers use illumination products to upstage and creatively outshine fellow exhibitors

SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. (April 15, 2005) — "Let there be light!" That is the mantra of exhibitors seeking creative ways to make their booths stand out from the trade show pack.

"Lighting creates energy to attract people in an often very chaotic trade show environment," says Howard Werner, a national lighting expert with New York City-based lighting design consortium Lightswitch. "You can really catch people's eyes with lighting. Whereas older installations of exhibits used to rely solely on overhead building lights, exhibit designers today understand that lighting creates drama and reveals your product in a compelling way."

Jim Lincoln, owner of Discount Displays in San Rafael agrees that lighting can make a dramatic impact on a trade show exhibit. "Lighting can make the difference between a good return on your trade show investment and a great return on your trade show investment," he says. "You can have the best products or services in the world, but if you can't attract people to your booth then how can you close the deal? Lighting gets people's attention."

Of course, not just any lighting will do. More convention centers are banning certain halogen lamps in a move to ensure the safety. Typical policies limit halogen lamps to 75 watts and they must be sealed to prevent direct handling of the bulb. The ban came after convention centers experienced several fire safety incidents. Lighting manufacturers are answering the call with new products designed with trade show displays in mind. Manufacturers that specialize in the needs of the trade show industry are prepared with appropriate products.

"One lighting fixture does not fit all trade show displays, but all trade show displays need lighting fixtures to enhance their presentation," Lincoln asserts. "There are a wide variety of lighting accessories to help exhibitors get the best results from their well-planned exhibit."

Army National Guard Dispatches Rapid Deployment Recruiting Tools
Highly portable tabletop displays provide military recruiters with maximum mobility to tell their story

SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. (February 16, 2005) — Strained by ongoing military action in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army National Guard's recruiters use a diverse arsenal of resources to reach potential soldiers.

"Tabletop displays are a rapid deployment marketing weapon," says Mark Johnson, president of the Exhibit Designers & Producers Association. "The National Guard could set up a tabletop display in a mall in the morning, then pack up and go to a university with the display that same afternoon. They could even change the graphics to display one message for teachers and counselors and a different message for students. Tabletop displays offer the National Guard a versatile, low-cost solution that's easy for one person to set up and break down quickly."

Jim Lincoln, owner of Discount Displays in San Rafael agrees that tabletop displays are a convenient solution for any organization that needs to either quickly move from place to place or participates in frequent exhibitions. "The National Guard is demonstrating the beauty of modern tabletop displays in its recent recruitment campaign," he says. "These displays are portable, so they fit in the trunk of a car, and they are more affordable than other exhibition marketing tools."

With 15,000 fewer troops than authorized, the Army National Guard has been offering more incentives to entice potential recruits. In addition to funding 100 percent of college tuition costs and fees, new recruits receive enlistment bonuses of up to $10,000 for joining. The Guard is digging deep into its recruitment arsenal with online initiatives, advertising campaigns and community events. But it's the tabletop displays that get young men's attention long enough for the recruiter to give him an earful about the benefits of enlisting.

"National Guard recruiters are struggling to refill their ranks," Lincoln says. "We are proud to offer the military a cost-effective method of reaching potential recruits where they live and work - malls, colleges and community events."

Illuminated Signage Takes a Bite Out of Crime
Research shows lighted signs help to reduce criminal activity and make people feel safer

SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. (April 1, 2005) — McGruff the Crime Dog® is barking about a British study giving teeth to sign maker claims that lighting reduces crime up to 20 percent.

"Thoughtfully placed lighting can significantly change a dark environment to one in which people can see well enough to avoid everything from muggers to potholes," says National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) director of research and evaluation Jean O'Neil. "If you position your illuminated sign so that light falls on the parking lot to augment street level lighting, then it absolutely will make a difference. Lighted signs help prevent theft and pilferage and can reduce the business owner's premise liability."

Jim Lincoln, owner of Discount Displays in San Rafael agrees that illuminated on-premise signage can play a key role in crime prevention. "Lighted signs are good for your business and for the community," he says. "By choosing illuminated signage you can boost your nighttime business and help take a bite out of crime after you close up shop. Customers appreciate your effort to light up commercial areas and police officers appreciate your contribution to keeping the community safe."

A directorate of British government, Home Office Research Development and Statistics (RSD) attempted to explain why street lighting has an impact on crime. The authors said that lighting increases community pride and confidence and strengthens informal social control. The study concluded that improvements in street lighting offer a cost-effective crime reduction measure and should be considered an important element in crime reduction programs.

"Lighting can't prevent disasters or attacks, but it can increase security and safety," Lincoln asserts. "Illuminated on-premise signage is one way business owners can contribute to the community's well-being. Celebrating 25 years as a crime biter, McGruff the Crime Dog is barking for a reason. Lighting makes a difference."

Imaged Fabric More Talkative Than A Gabby Picture
Affordable fabrics give vinyl displays a run for their money as designers get creative

SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. (March 18, 2005) -That old cliché "a picture says a thousand words" is getting a 21st century makeover as the trade show industry swaps vinyl for fabric.

"Imaged fabric offers an elegant look that you just can't get with vinyl," says Denise Breard, spokesperson for the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA). "Not only do photographic images look more realistic on fabric, it's also more cost-effective than vinyl or hard signage. What's more, fabric is lightweight, portable and you can even iron out the wrinkles. Vinyl still has its place for long-term displays, but fabric is taking over the tradeshow industry for good reasons."

Jim Lincoln, owner of Discount Displays in San Rafael agrees that fabric is fast becoming a material of choice for trade show displays. "Fabrics can help change the way people perceive ordinary products by adding a touch of class," he says. "Fabric is inviting, soft, and reproduces images beautifully. This classic material is taking the tradeshow industry by storm because a variety of textures and opacities offer you almost any look you want at a fraction of the cost of vinyl."

What is "imaged fabric?" More than soft signage, imaged fabric is a key element in some of today's more creative displays. It's the latest industry buzzword for fabric with an image printed on it via modern inkjet, dye sublimation or screen-printing processes. Banners, hanging dividers, signs, flags, backdrops and posters can many other marketing vehicles can be created on fabric with newfangled printing technologies. Unlike hard signage or vinyl, you can't crush, bend or break fabric. And even if it gets dirty or wrinkled you can wash it and iron it as good as new-over and over again.

"The cost benefits of fabric alone are enough to convince many exhibitors to trade in their vinyl for this cutting-edge cloth," Lincoln asserts. "But when you consider the versatility and visual appeal that fabric offers, you can see why the industry is finding new and creative uses for this user-friendly material."
